History margin:0px !essential;” /> Something but Paradise
Hawaii to many immediately means vacation and paradise on earth. However again earlier than the missionaries arrival in 1820, Hawaii was an uncivilzed, immoral society. Asa and Lucy Thurston seemed ahead to a culture governed by the kapu system, which was a strict set of rules which separated royalty from commoners and abased and belittled girls. Capital punishment was enacted for petty crimes equivalent to a girl consuming a banana (which was only for men). There were additionally tales of infanticide and sexual immorality and even rumors of cannibalism. The only travelers to Hawaii earlier than the missionaries were sailors, merchants, adventurers. Nobody thought to bring their households to this distant place on the opposite side of the world.

King Kamehameha had died, leaving his son Liholiho to rule the nation. Together with the excessive priest, Liholiho (Kamehameha II) abolished the kapu and the idolatrous religion, realizing that they’d stored their religion merely out of tradition and not out of faith. Hewahewa the priest was the first to start out the fires that burned the relics and temples. The field was sown and ready for the harvesters to arrive.
After 157 days at sea and 18,000 miles, the ship Thaddeus came inside sight of Hawaii. The company aboard consisted of the Thurstons, one other missionary and his wife (the Binghams), a doctor and his spouse (the Holmans), two teachers and their wives (the Whitneys and the Ruggleses), a printer and his wife (the Loomises), a farmer and his wife and five youngsters (the Chamberlains), and three natives who had been considerably educated within the States and were returning dwelling.
The missionaries had been greeted by the natives paddling out in canoes, bringing gifts of tropical fruit with them. They have been scarcely clothed, and what clothes they did wear was made out of fibers from bark. Lucy advised of her first encounter with the people of Hawaii:
As I used to be wanting out of a cabin window, to see a canoe of chattering natives with animated countenances, they approached and gave me a banana. In return I gave them a biscuit. “Wahine maikai,” (good woman) was the reply. I then threw out several pieces, and from my scanty vocabulary mentioned, “Wahine,” (girl.) They with great avidity snatched them up and again repeated, “Wahine maikai.”
Thus, after crusing eighteen thousand miles, I met, for the primary time, these youngsters of nature alone. Though our communications by look and speech had been restricted, and easy, friendly pledges obtained and given, but that interview by means of the cabin window of the brig Thaddeus gave me a strengthening touch in crossing the threshold of the nation.
The missionaries and their religion have been overwhelmingly welcomed by the royalty. The queen dowager Kalakua (certainly one of Kamehameha’s twenty-one wives) even requested the white ladies to make her a dress in the trend of their own. The people of Hawaii were not malicious as was thought, and what vice they did have took the form of polygamy and drunkenness, though there have been some instances of infanticide.
The king permitted the missionaries to stay at the least a yr and supplied the Thurstons and the Holmans with a thatched hut in Kailua (on the big Island) jacketshopuk stone island while the rest of the ship’s party sailed on to Honolulu (on Oahu). This hut consisted of 1 room, two open-air windows, and a flooring fabricated from grass and mats. Sitting on their trunks within the bare hut, the Christians held the primary household worship service in Hawaii.
Thus, Asa and Lucy Thurston found themselves in a wierd and international land, with only the bare requirements. They’d have to beat the limitations of language, culture, and local weather. jacketshopuk stone island The situation was so uncomfortable that the other missionary family, the Holmans, left within a few months to go back to their native land. The Thurstons have been left the only missionary household on the massive Island.
The Thurstons acquired to work at once with their mission. Asa preached and began teaching the royalty the best way to learn. In the first weeks, the missionaries were treated as curiosities and rarely had a non-public moment. Lucy and the other ladies on board the Thaddeus were the first white women ever seen on the islands.
Within two years of the arrival of the missionaries, a written language was created for the Hawaiian folks so they may learn and write in their very own tongue. After a couple of years of shifting round, the Thurstons settled down in Kailua and established a congregation there.
The tradition of Hawaii drastically modified in these first years. For once, the Hawaiians heard of a God who actually cared for them and who wasn’t changeable with whims of the second. The people heard of Jesus Christ in their own language, and He turned their lives round. Each Asa and Lucy cared for the people of Hawaii, instructing them to read and write, to love the God who made them, to dwell righteous lives. The Hawaiians responded with hearts softened and made keen. The final remnants of the system of idolatry were destroyed, and the hearts of the individuals were turned to the One True God.
Trials and tribulations
Lucy Thurston gave up all the comforts of a modern dwelling in New England for a very totally different life within the distant places of the world. For a few years, Lucy suffered pulmonary illness with out the convenience of medication and medical doctors that would have been readily at hand on the mainland. She gave beginning to her children hundreds of miles away from any hospital. With the firmness of faith, she raised 5 kids in a godless land, determined that they might belong to God. She gave her life to her husband, to the Gospel, to Hawaii.
Lucy Goodale Thurston was used as a stupendous device in bringing Christianity to Hawaii. Despite all odds, she led her life with courage and determination to do the suitable factor, even when that meant sacrificing all the pieces she had ever known and liked. In later years, Lucy was in a position to journey back to the land she had thought she left eternally. However she only went residence to go to. To her dying day, she lived in Hawaii, her adopted residence. With her life she was in a position to minister to the folks of Hawaii, witnessing the most stunning transformation of their lives. In her personal words:
“The Phrase of God is highly effective. I’ve lived to see both sides of the image. I saw this uncared for portion of our race, groping along in all darkness of nature, listening to messages from heaven with indifference and contempt, and for a very long time listening to as though they heard not. Man can communicate solely to the ear. I looked once more, and a secret energy was transforming their moral characters. Those very beings who were once bowing all the way down to stocks of wooden and stone, worshiping sharks and volcanoes, and slaves to all the sins which degrade human nature, are actually sitting on the toes of Jesus, learning and doing his will.”

Hello Jane, Lucy actually was a tremendous lady, and learning about her life makes me marvel if I could have been so brave. I really don’t know if I may make such a leap of religion as she did. Yet God rewarded her significantly.
I read Lucy’s own account of her life (see the Amazon hyperlink above). It was very interesting, though a bit of dry and simple. Positively a superb learn if you want to listen to about Hawaii’s missionaries from one among their own!

We’d like more girls like Lucy Thurston, who “see beyond the grave.” To suppose that she was willing to commit her life to a close to stranger in an effort to further the gospel! The trendy world has hassle understanding this type of commitment to God’s Phrase. I believe many people endure from a namby-pamby nit choosy disorder on the subject of deciding on a spouse. Though it is an enormous determination, it’s not one made exterior of faith. Lucy had the faith to see God working via her authorities and the circumstances she was put into, and it seems like they had a fantastic marriage in addition to a thriving witness Cheap Stone Island in Hawaii! Thanks for this great article; you actually did quite a lot of analysis. Is there a guide you’d recommend for studying more in regards to the Thurstons
